The North Country lost the capacity of 216,384 phone lines during Wednesday’s telephone service interruption, according to officials of Nicholville Telephone Company and slic.com.
Many landline phones were unable to receive or make calls from Wednesday afternoon until the early morning hours of Thursday. Most cell phone calls were not affected.
The problem occurred after a farmer in Parish cut a fiber consisting of 7 OC-48 circuits while digging a duck pond, said slic.com in an e-mail to customers. Parish is near Pulaski, between Watertown and Syracuse.
A single OC-48 is equivalent to 1,344 T1 lines and a single T1 is capable of 23 simultaneous phones calls, they said.
Partial telephone service was restored in St. Lawrence County by 2:30 a.m. July 14, and complete service was back by 4 a.m.
