MASSENA -- Dick's Sporting Goods is a step closer to opening a store in Massena, according to Mayor James Hidy.
Hidy said town and village officials met in an executive session on Tuesday with Harte Haven Plaza owner Michael Wachs.
"He has a letter of intent from Dick's Sporting Goods" to build on the Massena Arena property, Hidy said, adding that Dick's is expected to make a formal offer on the property, which is assessed around $1 million, within two weeks.
The town and village are moving forward with relocating the annex area, which includes an outdoor skating rink and minor soccer fields. He added that the arena will stay.
The state legislature needs to approve the sale, Hidy said, but they won't be able to do anything until they reconvene in September.
Albany has to sign off on the sale because the property is within a New York state park boundary.
The sale will help finance relocating the rink and fields, with the extra money going into the Joint Recreation fund.
"It will be low-cost," Hidy said. He added that the rink will either be moved to Bushnell Field or Alcoa Field. The soccer field may be relocated to the park on Danforth Place.
"We're excited the process is moving forward. Unfortunately, we're dealing with government so it's a slow process," according to Massena's mayor. "It's a positive thing."
