MASSENA -- After a Tuesday night presentation from Andy McMahon of Massena Electric Department, the Board of Trustees wants to see the MED board re-bid the lighting upgrade work at Massena Arena.
McMahon said since the department didn’t specify fluorescent or LED lighting, the bids ranged from $51,000 to $171,000.
“I think we’d have more to choose from and feel more comfortable about it,” he said. The board wants the new bid to specify all fluorescent lighting.
He also has to get input from the Town Council and the Recreation Commission before MED makes a final call.
The tab will be split between MED, the village, and the town. The village will chip in $30,600 and the town $20,400. MED will spend out of money they have set aside to fund energy-efficiency projects. There is $136,000 left from $500,000.
McMahon anticipates the new lights will yield significant savings on the arena’s annual power bill, which would be passed on to local taxpayers. Power costs about $31,000 a year and about $12,400 of that is lighting.
The new lights will be NCAA Division I quality, McMahon said. He added that SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall and Clarkson’s Cheel Arena each have the same kind of lighting, which would be specified in the re-bid.
Whichever route MED takes, the work won’t begin until mid-2014 when the ice is removed, according to McMahon.
