MASSENA -- The village will help businesses and organizations who want to apply for funding to make their sidewalks and roads Complete Streets compliant.

Village resident R. Shawn Gray at the village meeting on Tuesday asked if there was any help available to add “bump outs” at crosswalks. Gray is a member of a coalition revitalizing the former Schine’s Theater.

Complete Streets are uniform design standards for roads, sidewalks and other local transportation infrastructure. It is aimed at making everything friendlier to pedestrians and bicyclists, while making everything more accessible, Mayor Tim Currier said after they adopted the policy in February.

On Tuesday, Deputy Mayor Matt Lebire said while the Complete Streets designs are not mandated, the village will help people find money to make it work.

“It wouldn’t be automatic. We’ll be forming a committee very soon. They’ll be looking for a couple of test projects. Any business or organization can contact me or the mayor,” Lebire said. “These are design standards and ideas we want to keep in mind as we’re doing projects, and we want to encourage private entities to do it as well. For those who may be interested, we’ll gladly work with them.”

The bump outs Gray referred to are buffer zones around cross walks. The curb would be curved slightly to extend toward the roadway, making them more visible to oncoming traffic. Gray said it could prevent large trucks from damaging the marquee, which they plan to reinstall in the near future.
