MASSENA -- The village Board of Trustees has approved selling the old Department of Public Works lot on South Main Street to St. Lawrence Soyway for $181,455.

The village is relocating the DPW, along with its storage and compost site, to its new lot on state Route 37.

Trustee Tim Ahlfeld, who voted Tuesday in favor of allowing the mayor to sign the purchase agreement, said he thinks it may be wise for the village DPW and town Highway Department to share facilities.

“I think what we need to do is find out for the residents’ benefit what the town is going to do. I don’t want to see us go over there and spend a lot of money and thereafter find out the town has built something we could use,” Ahlfeld said. “I can’t understand why the town of Massena wouldn’t want to build something big enough so we could all use it. The thing we don’t have is the land. They’ve got more land than they know what to do with.”

Mayor Tim Currier said he had spoken with town officials about the idea, but it fizzled.
