Massena Memorial Hospital finance committee says February was favorable despite continued losses

MASSENA -- The chairman of Massena Memorial Hospital’s finance committee says although the February books showed a loss, operating expense was below budget for the first time in his tenure as a board member.

“The first time in my tenure on the board where we actually lowered operating expenses … beating the budgeted performance,” finance committee chairman Gary Borgosz said. “I think that’s good to see … job well done.”

In February, MMH spent $3,993,116 in operating expenses, below the expected $4,082,779. They spent $4,218,022 in Feb. 2014.

Overall, MMH saw a $102,033 February net loss and budgeted to be down $205,972. They ended about $425,000 in the red the same month last year.

MMH CFO James Smith said inpatient volume over budget contributed to the loss being more narrow than anticipated. They registered 198 patients and planned on 172.

“It was a very favorable month on the in-patient side,” Smith said.

But outpatient volume went below budget. Between emergency room, clinics and other types of visits, they totaled 9,167 compared to 10,397.
