MASSENA -- The Board of Education on Thursday approved a reduction in assessment and refund in property taxes for Northern New York Newspapers and St. Lawrence Plaza.
The board approved a resolution granting Johnson Newspaper Corporation a $200,000 assessment reduction and a $10,900 tax refund for its Northern New York Newspapers office and printing plant at 1 Harrowgate Commons. The company publishes the Daily Courier Observer, Ogdensburg Journal, Advance News and St. Lawrence Plaindealer.
Another resolution granted W.P. Realty an $800,000 assessment reduction and $15,500 refund for the St. Lawrence Plaza at 6200 State Rte. 37, which houses Hannaford, East Wok, Speed Queen laundromat and a nail salon.
In July 2013, Johnson Newspapers filed a challenge to their $2,000,000 assessment, claiming it was worth only $1,000,000.
Under the settlement, it is now assessed at $1,800,000.
Around the same time, W.P. Realty filed a challenge to their $5 million assessment, claiming the property was worth only $500,000.
The deal passed Thursday values the property at $4,200,000.
