Malone general surgeon to move to Potsdam, begins seeing patients Wednesday

POTSDAM – A surgeon who has practiced 18 years in Malone will open a new practice and begin seeing patients in Potsdam on Wednesday.

Dr. Jay Dewell, a board certified general surgeon, will open his practice at 145 Market St.

Dewell most recently served 18 years as attending general surgeon in private practice at Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone. He performs surgeries at Canton-Potsdam Hospital and is in the process of transitioning his main practice location from Malone to Potsdam.

Dewell completed his medical degree at Albany Medical College, and both his internship and residencies in general surgery at The Stamford Hospital, Stamford, Ct. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Union College in Schenectady, where he graduated cum laude.

Dewell’s practice encompasses a wide range of general surgical procedures, including breast surgery, including standard and stereotactic (x-ray guided) breast biopsies, and minimally invasive breast surgery; intestinal procedures such as large and small bowel, diverticulitis surgery, and colon resections; skin surgery procedures including management of benign and malignant skin diseases, biopsies, skin grafts, and advancement flaps; vascular access provided for chemotherapy and long-term antibiotic administration; laparoscopic (image guided, minimally invasive) surgeries such as gall bladders, appendectomies, hernias (pediatric, abdominal wall and groin), and more complex ventral hernias; carpal tunnel surgery, and others.
