CANTON – Citing a lack of customers using the Canton branch, Key Bank will close its location at 125 East Main St. later this spring.

The branch will close on April 29, according to Therese Myers, vice president of corporate communications.

“We looked at all the branches and customers are not coming in as much as they used to,” she said.

Meyers said that about 70 percent of banking is done electronically.

“Online and mobile banking have taken off in recent years,” she said.

Customers can bank through mobile apps, the website, ATMs and the telephone as well as in person at other Key Bank locations.

Meyers said Key Bank is trying to find the right balance of branches and other forms of banking.

“Sometimes you just need to sit down and talk with someone,” she said.

There are no plans to close any other locations in St. Lawrence County, Myers said.

“With most customers going to electronic banking this is clearly what they want,” she said.

Most customers should not have to change any information and can access their account information from any Key Bank location. Key Bank has branches in Canton, Massena, Ogdensburg and Gouveneur.

Customers with safety deposit boxes will have to move their contents to another location before the bank closes permanently.

“They will be given a free year at a new branch for their inconvenience,” Myers said.

Myers said that employees will be given the opportunity to work at other locations within the company.
