St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate rose slightly in July from the previous month, but is down over one percent versus one year ago.
In July, 8.3 percent of St. Lawrence County workers received unemployment insurance, compared at 7.9 percent in June, according to the state Department of Labor.
In July 2013, 9.5 percent of county workers received unemployment benefits, DOL said.
St. Lawrence County has the second highest unemployment rate in the state. Bronx County has an unemployment rate of 11.2 percent.
The total number of St. Lawrence County residents receiving benefits in July was 3,800 with 45,5000 employed. In June there were 41,700 employed and 3,800 unemployed in the county. In July 2013, 4,500 were reportedly receiving unemployment benefits.
To our east in Franklin County, the July unemployment rate was 7.3 percent, which is down from 8.5 percent last month. The DOL says 1,600 received unemployment benefits and 20,100 were employed.
To our west in Jefferson County, the DOL says the unemployment rate was 7.3 percent, which is down 1.2 percent from June. Total residents receiving unemployment insurance was 3,500 and the total employed was 44,800.
