Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York's farmer of the year is Heuvelton’s Brian Bennett of Bittersweet Farm.
Bennett was keynote speaker at the association’s winter conference in Saratoga, where he accepted his award.
Bennett’s Bittersweet Farm is what he calls “a small-scale diversified organic agricultural enterprise.”
He said in his speech to attendees the enterprise is “wholly committed to sharing” his growing expertise. “We belong to a nutritionally rich education sharing community,” he said to the people gathered at the meeting.
Bittersweet Farm “engages young people in the vagaries of food production,” Bennett said. “Some of the people we work with come from Saint Lawrence University, Clarkson University, State University of New York Potsdam, SUNY Canton, the Youth Advocacy Program, Worldwide Workers on Organic Farms, interns, the DayCare Center, BOCES, Community Supported Agriculture members, neighbors and family.”
