Anthem, one of the nation's largest healthcare providers, was the victim of a recent cyberattack, according to the company's CEO. The company provides Blue Cross Blue Shield coverage in a dozen states.
Hackers broke into their system and accessed current and former members names, birthdays, medical IDs/social security numbers, street addresses, email addresses and employment information, including income data, Anthem CEO Joeph Swedish said.
"Based on what we know now, there is no evidence that credit card or medical information, such as claims, test results or diagnostic codes were targeted or compromised," Swedish said in a prepared statement.
Swedish said the attackers also accessed Anthem personnel's information, including his.
He says they reported the incident to the FBI as soon as they noticed something was wrong and they are cooperating with an ongoing investigation.
He said they are now contracting with the cybersecturity firm Mediant to try and prevent further attacks.
The company has set up a website where current and former members can find out if their information was compromised, www.anthemfacts.com. There is also a phone number, 1-877-263-7995.
