CANTON – Calling them “seasonal stores,” Hacketts’ Chief Operating Officer Herbert Becker says that the company’s stores in Canton and Sackets Harbor closed after Memorial Day and will remain closed until Labor Day.
The variety-store chain has been working through a bankruptcy proceeding after a cash shortfall forced the closure of several stores and non-payment to creditors.
“There are not enough people there during the summer to support the stores” in Canton and Sackets Harbor, Becker said.
Becker says the employees in those two stores will be working at the chain’s other stores in Massena and Ogdensburg over the summer.
Becker describes the Ogdensburg and Massena outlets as “full-time stores.”
Meanwhile Becker says he hopes the company to emerge from bankruptcy within a couple of months.
He says the latest reorganization plan will be “circulated to creditors in the next week or so, before the end of the month,” and will be presented to the bankruptcy court early in July.
Becker says he anticipates “we will be out of bankruptcy by the end of the summer.”
