St. Lawrence Seaway shipping was down in August compared to August 2015, according to the Canada-based Chamber of Marine Commerce.
According to the chamber, total shipments last month tallied 17,275,000 metric tons compared to 18,688,000 metric tons in August 2015. That’s a 7.56 percent drop.
Grain shipments dropped 5.4 percent to 4,686,000 metric tons last month from 4,954,000 metric tons the same month last year.
Iron ore shipments took an 18.26 percent dive, totaling 2,922,000 metric tons last month and 3,576,000 metric tons in August 2015.
Coal shipments dropped 7.7 percent. They registered 1,388,000 metric tons in August and 1,504,000 metric tons the same month last year.
Dry bulk shipments dropped 13.85 percent to 4,719,000 metric tons last month from 5,477,000 metric tons in August 2015.
Liquid bulk shipments rose 28.65 percent. They tallied 2,154,000 metric tons last month and 1,674,000 metric tons the same month last year.
General cargo shipments went down 5.63 percent, coming in at 1,378,000 metric tons last month and 1,460,000 metric tons in August 2015.
Total vessel transits were down 1.68 percent at 1,995 total transits last month and 2,029 in August 2015.
