Gas prices inching up again in North Country and around U.S., AAA says

The average gasoline price for a gallon of regular is pegged at $2 per gallon in New York State, and prices are creeping up in the North Country and around the U.S., but they could begin dropping again soon.

GasBuddy.com reports that the average price per gallon in New York State Monday was $2.00, but that was till 50¢ cheaper than a year ago.

In Norfolk the price at the Sunoco station was $2.09; in Potsdam the lowest price reported to GasBuddy was $2.07 at Parkway Express n Elm Street; it was reported at $2.11 at the Mobil station on East Main Street in Canton; and the best price in Massena was reported as $2.13 at the Mobil on South Main and at Stewart’s at the intersection of State Rts. 56 and 37.

The national average of $1.94 per gallon is 12 cents higher than last week – the biggest weekly increase since early March 2015, according to the American Automobile Association, AAA.

Prices increased by double digits due to a decline in gasoline supplies, relatively strong demand and continued refinery maintenance, keeping production down.

It is the highest average in two months, although Americans are still saving 50 cents per gallon compared to March 14, 2015.

New York State’s average of $2.00 lands us in the top ten most expensive average gas prices – but at number 10 and no worse.

Conversations about when and if the market has reached its bottom persist, and market fundamentals continue to point to supply outpacing demand, which could cause prices to once again turn lower, AAA said in a press release Monday.
