GardenShare has received a grant from the United State Department of Agriculture’s Local Food Promotion Program to evaluate the feasibility of having a mobile farmers' market that would serve the more remote parts of St. Lawrence County.
The grant, for $28,156, will allow GardenShare to evaluate the need for more access to fresh, locally grown produce, potential locations for a mobile farmers market to set up, and the interest of both consumers and farmers in this idea.
GardenShare expects to complete this work over the next nine to ten months and will engage area farmers, volunteers, and student interns in the project. If the result of the feasibility study suggests that a mobile farmers market is viable in St. Lawrence County, then GardenShare would be seeking funding to implement such a program, likely starting with the 2019 growing season.
