POTSDAM – As the Friends of Potsdam Humane Society plan their fundraising activities for this year, the group has presented to the Humane Society a check for $10,000 in funds raised last year.

The FOPHS, a group of animal supporters who organized the Friends group early in 2014, meets the second Saturday of each month at the Potsdam Animal Shelter on Madrid Avenue to plan fundraising activities, assess the needs of the shelter, and to donate funds raised the month before.

The group is made up of animal lovers from all walks of life and from all over the North Country, but come together to work for one “furry” cause.

PHS Executive Director Alysia Wells said, “FOPHS has been bringing in money all year as they earn it, and it was amazing that the total went over the $10,000 mark. We are all thrilled with the help they give.”

The Friends are creating ideas for fun ways to raise money for the cause. February is the month of “Paws for a Cause,” with paper paws in local diners and other businesses that give people a chance to donate a dollar in memory of or to honor a pet or loved one.

In addition, the group is helping to find volunteers to work the Centerplate concession stands at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, which takes a lot of volunteer hours, according to PHS board member Bonnie Boyd. Volunteers get free admission to events and food for helping, and PHS gets 10 percent of the money taken in at the concessions designated for PHS.

On March 29, the group is sponsoring a Bowling Extravaganza at Market Lanes. In addition to the teams of bowlers, everyone else in the community can stop by and take a chance on raffles and watch the bowling fun. Details of the event may be found on the Friends of Potsdam Humane Society’s Facebook page.

And the group is working on PHS’s “Strut Your Mutt” at Pine Street Arena May 2.

The Friends are looking for others who would like to join their efforts. Lorry has more info at 388-5478.
