Financing for Canton brewery, Gouverneur sewer study, elevator for Russell Town Hall receives approval

Financing for a Canton brewery, a Gouverneur sewer study and an elevator for the Russell Town Hall has been approved by state officials.

Those are some of the smaller St. Lawrence County projects included in the $90.2 million awarded to the North Country Regional Economic Development Council just before the holidays.

The biggest projects, as reported earlier, included funding for equipment for Massena’s Curran Renewables, a “food hub” in Canton and a “Blueway Trail” along the Raquette River.

Canton and Massena also received a combined $1.1 million for industrial park and housing projects, while Potsdam’s Slic Network Solutions was awarded $1.37 million for broadband installation in Hamilton County; for details visit our previous stories here and here.

Now that the dust and excitement have settled, officials are planning to implement some of the other projects among the 82 approved for the North Country Region.

Here is a look at some of the St. Lawrence County projects that were overlooked in the initial days after the $90.2 million award was announced:

• $65,000 to the St. Lawrence Brewing Company of Canton, for an energy-recovery system in the brew house and purchase of a fuel efficient vehicle for the sales staff. The brewery is operated by Kenneth M. and Katrina G. Hebb who also run the Blackbird Café in downtown Canton. The brewing facility is located in the first building in the industrial park in Canton.

• $30,000 to the Village of Gouverneur for a wastewater engineering study to evaluate alternatives for replacing the Dorwin Street connector sewer that connects Factory Street, Depot Street and Beckworth Street in the village.

• $117,500 to the Town of Russell to repair the roof, install a canopy over the door exit, add a lift/elevator, electrical and lighting work and adding a handicap restroom. The early 20th century building currently houses the town office, court, community room and post office on the first floor. The second floor contains a 300-seat theater that is almost entirely intact, including early projection equipment.

• $75,000 for preparation of a Thousand Island Regional Assessment coordinated by the Town of Hammond, along with the town and village of Morristown and seven other communities in Jefferson County. The study of the Thousand Islands will be used for designation of a “Scenic Area of Statewide Significance.”

• $500,000 for the Development Authority of the North Country’s Telcommunications Loan Fund to support the “last mile buildout” of telecommunications in St. Lawrence, Jefferson and Lewis counties.
