CANTON -- The St. Lawrence County Chamber will honor Coakley Carpet One Ace Hardware as the Business of the Year at its annual dinner on Oct. 15 at SUNY Potsdam.
The event will feature an update of the efforts of the County Chamber, as well as a live and silent auction and the special award presented to the Coakley family.
Coakley Carpet One Ace Hardware, Outer West Main Street, has been a family run business since 1902. John P. Coakley started the business assembling a crew that traveled around the county building barns.
That evolved into a sawmill in Madrid, when his sons, Bob and John, joined the business. The business was later moved to “The Island” in Canton as a retail lumberyard.
In 1976, Bob’s son Bill entered the family business, opening a True Value Hardware store at the current location. The business became an Ace Hardware vendor in 2000.
The store has a hardware department, a complete flooring department, kitchen and bath design and installation, and a repair and installation team who are ready to handle everything, Bill says, including the kitchen sink. In the spring the store offers a huge selection of plants and flowers; in winter, Christmas trees, kissing balls and wreaths are displayed for sale.
In 2005, the family opened a second store in Saranac Lake. Both stores have been very community-centered, donating to many local organizations. The stores employ more than 50 people.
The nomination for Coakley’s was submitted by several of their customers.
