Mathews Maple in Oswegatchie recieves $3,375 to make syrup-making more energy efficient

OSWEGATCHIE -- Mathews Maple is one of 27 New York farms to receive funding for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development agency has announced.

Mathews will receive $3,375 for the project which is part of a $62.5 million package being distributed to 705 projects in 45 states and Puerto Rico.

In total, 27 New York projects received $441,558 in funding. More than $345,000 will be distributed as grants and $96,000 will be awarded as a loan guarantee.

Seventeen of the projects, including Mathews, are for energy-efficient maple syrup production equipment. Most involve the purchase of reverse-osmosis equipment, or a combination of new flue pans and updated processing equipment. This new equipment reduces the energy usage in the typical maple syrup operation by 50 to 80 percent. New York maple syrup producers that received funding are:
