CANTON – For the first time in years, a local taxi service is operating in Canton.

G-Man’s Taxi of Ogdensburg began serving Canton about two weeks ago, said owner Matthew Gladle. “We’re giving it a shot,” he said.

For rides within the village, the service is charging a flat fee of $5, regardless of the number of passengers, he said. Higher fees are charged for destinations beyond the village limits.

The phone number is 528-5151. Hours are 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

The service currently employs three drivers and operates one vehicle in Ogdensburg and one in Canton, with two back-ups available, he said. The business began in Ogdensburg in 2003.

In addition to regular taxi service, G-Man’s also provides rides to airports for college students and others. The firm is Medicaid-approved to provide trips to doctor’s offices and hospitals for Medicaid recipients. In addition, G-Man’s provides rides to work for participants the Workfare program, he said.

Gladle said he doesn’t have plans to expand to any other communities in the immediate future because the staff is “putting 110 percent of our energy” into getting the Canton service up and running.
