MASSENA – Traffic and cargoes through the Montreal to Lake Ontario section of the St. Lawrence Seaway are generally down from last year’s start to the shipping season.
The Seaway opened on March 22 in both 2012 and 2013.
Year-to-date figures show transits through the section through the end of April this year were down nine percent at 290, compared with 319 last year, according to the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation.
As for cargoes, liquid bulk is up 36.6 percent and coal is up one-half of one percent so far this year, but all other categories are down, the largest drop being in iron ore, where 1,186 metric tons were shipped through April last year and 856 tons have shipped this year, a drop of 27.8 percent.
This section of the Seaway includes the Bertrand H. Snell and Dwight D. Eisenhower locks near Massena, and the Montreal-area locks St. Lambert, Côte Ste. Catherine, and Lower and Upper Beauharnois, and Iroquois Lock at Lake Ontario.
