The federal government has extended a program to save tax dollars through green government operations, a move supported by North Country congressman Bill Owens.
The agreement would extend a 2011 program that challenged federal agencies to use $2 billion of private-sector funding and expertise for efficiency upgrades, Owens said.
The government spends about $6 billion per year on energy costs, and owns nearly 3 billion square feet of building space, according to the Department of Energy.
“Through commonsense upgrades and expert advice, the government can cut its energy consumption and save taxpayer money,” Owens said. “I am pleased to see this important program will be in place for another two years.”
