Community Bank closed following fire in Potsdam

POTSDAM -- Community Bank will be closed this week following a blaze that caused fire damage to a mechanical room and smoke damage throughout the building Saturday morning.

The Potsdam Fire Department says they responded to a fire alarm at 70 Market St. which is home the bank, Potsdam Insurance and the St. Lawrence County Probation Department.

Once on scene firefighters observed smoke emanating from numerous vents in the side and roof of the building. Firefighters gained access to the building and discovered the fire was in a mechanical room in Community Bank.

The fire was put out and the smoke was evacuated from the building.

"Nobody was in the building at the time and there was no impact on safe deposit boxes," said Julianna Monacelli, public relations director, Dixon Schwabl for Community Bank N.A.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team.

No injuries were reported.

"The branch will remain closed next week while we further assess the damage, however any nearby Community Bank branches will be happy to help customers with their banking needs including the Potsdam mini branch located on May Road and the nearby Community Bank offices in Canton, Massena, Madrid and Norwood," Monacelli said.

The building was reportedly insured.

Potsdam firefighters were provided mutual aid by firefighters from Norwood, West Potsdam and West Stockholm. Parishville fire was on standby.Potsdam Rescue, Potsdam police, St. Lawrence County Deputy Fire, National Grib and St. Lawrence Gas were also on scene.
