OGDENSBURG -- Sales tax revenues continue to trend slightly ahead of 2017’s receipts, according to a report from Ogdensburg’s City Manager Sarah Purdy.
Since January, the city has received $1.59 million this year, compared to $1.56 million at the same time last year.
That’s about 43 percent of the total budgeted by the city for 2018.
Ogdensburg has been struggling financially for the past several budget seasons. City council has been conservative in its sales tax estimates. Last year the city collected about 4 percent more than it anticipated from sales taxes and remains on a similar pace this year.
In June, the city received official approval from the state to get help from the state’s financial restructuring board.
Over the past few years, Ogdensburg has had its bond rating drop, reduced the number of DPW employees and cut back on brush pickups.
The city’s tax rate is about $19.77 per $1,000 of assessed property value. According to the city manager, the city taxes are near the constitutional limit. In past interviews, Purdy also pointed out that the majority of city property is tax exempt.
