OGDENSBURG -- Ogdensburg City Council approved $40,000 in demolition work after the corner of the former Desperados bar caved in.
City Manager John Pinkerton said Richardson & Sons performed emergency work, including an asbestos survey, on the building after a portion of the building caved in, creating a hazard.
The building is located at 212 Ford Street.
Pinkerton said the work began prior to the Monday meeting and prior to the city council’s approval because it created a potential public safety hazard, which could also create legal troubles.
The city did not put the work out for bid due to the emergency conditions.
“A portion of the old Desperados building located at 212 Ford Street has deteriorated to the point of being a danger to the public,” the resolution says. “The city is in the process of updating the asbestos survey on the effected northeast corner of this building.”
Pinkerton said Richardson & Sons were chose because they were available and had the necessary manpower, equipment and time to handle the situation promptly.
Deputy Mayor Michael Morley supported Pinkerton’s decision to act quickly and noted that Richardson & Sons has served the city well in the past.
The $40,000 will come from the city’s contingency fund.
