OGDENSBURG – Two ships carrying salt docked and unloaded at the Port of Ogdensburg this week, including one with a load from Cargill, Inc., the first shipment from the huge Minneapolis-based conglomerate for the port.
The U.S. River Class Marine Vessel Calumet docked at the Port of Ogdensburg Sunday to deliver 18,000 tons of road salt for Cargill, according to the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority.
The 630-foot U.S. flagged vessel from Cleveland, Ohio is owned by Grand River Navigation.
“We are very enthusiastic to have Cargill as a new port customer,” said John A. Rishe, the Authority’s Director of Commercial and Industrial Development. “Cargill anticipates bringing three vessels at the port this fall, all of which is new business for the facility.
And since then, 30,000 tons more of road salt was delivered for the Morton Salt Company in the 730-foot Marine Vessel Peter R. Cresswell’s second visit of the season to the port on Tuesday.
“The Cresswell has completed its second of two scheduled deliveries to the Port of Ogdensburg for Morton Salt. We will commence salt relocation over the next few days,” said Steven J. Lawrence, Director of Operations of Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority.
The St. Catherines, Ontario-based vessel is owned by Seaway Marine Transport.
The salt will be used throughout the North Country by county and municipal governments and private firms. It will replenish reserves to help road workers ensure safe winter driving conditions.
“Salt depot operations are an important part of what we do at the port” said Wade A. Davis, Executive Director of the Authority. “It not only ensures safe travel during bad weather, salt handling operations creates employment throughout the fall and winter months for warehousemen, loader operators, and truckers.”
