CANTON -- After hearing from competitors, village trustees Monday held off on a decision on a subdivision for a proposed third hotel in town.

Representatives of University Suites and the Best Western hotels talked about “fill rates” regarding a hotel’s occupancy at a public hearing on the issue, said Mayor Mike Dalton after the meeting.

“I think they were concerned about the competition side of things,” the mayor said.

The board tabled action on the proposed 9.6-acre subdivision on University Plaza land, owned by David C. Muraco through Empire Property Management of Dewitt.

“The board took no decision on the subdivision,” during its regular meeting after the hearing, Dalton said.

“The board will have to consider those comments” and any others, he said, and will likely take another vote on the subdivision at their next regular meeting on Dec. 19.

The applicant, New Venture Assets, LLC, also a Muraco company, wants the subdivision to be made on a wooded undeveloped portion on the eastern side of the property on Main Street, U.S. Rt. 11, east of downtown.

The State Department of Transportation earlier refused an initial request from the developer for an entrance to the hotel along Rt. 11, in addition to the existing plaza curb cuts, “but if it’s subdivided, that could drive the curb cut issue,” Dalton said.

Dalton said there will be two meetings of the board in December.

The annual organizational meeting will be on Dec. 12, and the next regular meeting is set for Dec. 19.
