CANTON -- Two North Country accounting firms have announced they have merged.

Gray & Gray Certified Public Accountants, P.C. of Canton and Hoffman & Eells, CPAs, P.C., based in Malone and with offices in Canton, Massena, Lake Placid and Plattsburgh, are one firm as of Nov. 11.

The new firm will be known as Hoffman Eells & Gray CPAs P.C., the company announced Tuesday.

Gray & Gray has been serving businesses and individuals for over 35 years. CPA John J. Gray, Jr., began his accounting and tax practice in the late 1970s while living in Saranac Lake. Gray practiced as a sole practitioner until 2001, when he made a sizeable acquisition when he purchased the CPA firm of Canfield & Menz in Canton upon the retirement of the remaining partner, Eleanor Menz. In 2005, Gray partnered with his daughter, Angela M. Gray, CPA, which marked the creation of Gray & Gray.

Hoffman & Eells traces its roots back nearly 100 years, when, in 1916, Charles Wolfe began his practice in Malone in 1916. Gary Dragon and Gary Benware took over Wolfe’s firm in the mid 1970s. In the late 1920s Louis Gelles started an accounting practice in Lake Placid and his son Henry took it over in the 1950s. Pam Laplante began work with Henry Gelles in 1973 and Doug Hoffman purchased the Gelles firm in 1980.

In 2007, the two firms of Dragon and Benware and Douglas Hoffman CPAs merged to become the largest CPA firm in the North Country and the Adirondack region.

In 2014, the firm was renamed Hoffman & Eells when Hoffman and Nicholas Eells and Laplante became the remaining partners.

“The combination of both firms provides the North Country with an accounting resource that is dedicated to our clients’ success,” said Hoffman in a press release.

“The partners of Hoffman Eells & Gray CPAs, P.C., along with our talented staff of 30 people are able to provide our clients with the latest financial tools needed to be competitive and successful,” he said.
