This week's issue: The Ogdensburg Correctional Facility, which employs 287, is one of four prisons Gov. David A. Paterson proposes eliminating to save $59 million over two years. The closure is part of a plan to help the state deal with a projected $8.2 billion 2011 deficit. Area business leaders are concerned the closure will dramatically affect the local economy and unemployment rate.
This week's question: "Should the Ogdensburg Correctional Facility be closed?"
Take the NCNow Survey. Results will be posted Monday, March 15
Results of last week's question: "The state Department of Transportation is planning a $6.1 million, one-mile reconstruction of NYS Hwy. 56 to partially straighten the road and replace the one-lane bridge at the South Colton "S-curve." "Given the current state budget deficit, is this project necessary?"

1. Not at this time. By the way since when did the letter S become the S curve? Any local will tell you this has been the letter S forever. Mon, Mar 8, 2010 10:08 AM 2. This "s" Curve has been here how long? Just more of the same - wasting money in government. 6.1 million? That would feed a lot of people and heat a lot of homes - crazy people that sit back and think up all of this stuff! Mon, Mar 8, 2010 9:37 AM 3. There are too many roads in St Lawrence county that need serious repair-besides, the detour would probably be out by the dam and Joe Indian pond and that road is in terrible shape. Mon, Mar 8, 2010 9:28 AM
4. no-no-no-no-no Mon, Mar 8, 2010 9:23 AM 5. They should fix anything that needs structural repair, but I don't see the need to straighten out the curve. Everyone can just keep driving slowly and cautiously like we all have since the road was built. If they want to spend $6.1 million on road work I can think of a lot of other roads and bridges that need repair (not widening, not straightening, not aesthetic improvements...just flat out repair). Mon, Mar 8, 2010 9:22 AM
6. Why wait until someone losses their life. Mon, Mar 8, 2010 8:47 AM
7. I have mixed feelings. We really need jobs up here plus where is the money going to go if they don't do it. You know the state will just spend it somewhere else. As we all know there are a lot of worse places they could be spending it and they will spend it somewhere else. I just wish they would widen the curves to make it safer. Being a semi truck driver it is impossible to go around the curves and keep the trailer in your own lane. I have met other trucks there before and one of us had to back up so not to hit each other. Mon, Mar 8, 2010 6:23 AM
8. I do, in fact, like that twist and turn, HUGE waste of money on a road less traveled. Mon, Mar 8, 2010 5:30 AM
10. This goes along with the New Deal approach of "Give a man a shovel..." Instead of this, I believe we need to stop living beyond our means. We are consuming too much, more than our fair share. By not "fixing" the roads we would suffer less economic investment (6.1m) and that would of course lead to a "decreased" standard of living. I disagree. There is much about humanity that a developing country can teach us. Sun, Mar 7, 2010 10:10 PM
11. However, we need to close Ogdensburg Correction this is important. Sun, Mar 7, 2010 8:57 PM
12. The light takes too long, but I think that there are more important things the money can go to, like fixing some of the potholes on 28N Sun, Mar 7, 2010 7:38 PM
13. I firmly believe the Park must be retained as "forever wild." Sun, Mar 7, 2010 5:08 PM
14. That Curve has been around a long time, the cost to remove it could and should be used on more important and doable project such as saying our State Parks, or how about filling in the potholes. Leave the darn curve alone... Sun, Mar 7, 2010 3:28 PM
15. I believe since the road has been like it is for a long time now is not the time to spend over $6 million on a mile of road Sun, Mar 7, 2010 3:12 PM
16. Leave the s curve alone it slows down traffic and has been the talk of the town for years. Its not broke so dont fix it. Everybody that works or lives here knows the curve why do we have to change it for outsiders. Use the money where it can be useful like helping the poor working man fix there house or help him or her fix there car so they have safe transportation for there children. Sun, Mar 7, 2010 3:04 PM
17. save the prison jobs, don't worry about a road that is drivable. Sun, Mar 7, 2010 2:09 PM
18. that curve is so bad I hate driving on that road at times. I strongly suggest them to fix it so it would be a lot safer for everyone to drive it. Sun, Mar 7, 2010 1:31 PM
19. cant afford to give NYS taxes back yet lets "spend" on a road thats under control right now ehh. Sun, Mar 7, 2010 12:39 PM
20. This project is not necessary under ANY circumstances! For the first time ever, it is safe to drive around that curve. There is only one-way traffic, controlled by a red light at each side of the curve. The proposal would replace it with 4 smaller curves in a short distance, and anyone who drives that road has seen how that works out. It is a wonder there are not even more accidents on that road. Also, what is going to be accomplished by raising the roadway 25 feet-a cliff on each side of the road? Sun, Mar 7, 2010 12:10 PM 21. Put it back in the taxable base, the state has to much untaxed land now. Also let off on some of the land use restrictions and maybe it will be become useable again by tax payers of our great state. Sun, Mar 7, 2010 12:00 PM 22. $6.1M to add more curves to this section? I don't think so. It works now, and is as safe as it could be under the circumstances. Perhaps the funding could be kept locally and spread out to fund several projects that would benefit the residents of the north country much more than this one. Sun, Mar 7, 2010 10:36 AM 23. Unfortunately, drivers have to slow down to go over the bridge and it takes them a little longer to get to where they are going. So let's spend $6.1 million to keep from inconveniencing a few impatient drivers. What? What a waste of money! However another thought, how much would it cost to fix the bridge but leave the road the way it is. Possibly a few million less. If Rt. 56 is going to be a major connecting road to the new upstate interstate, then leave it alone and let it be part of a tourist's scenic interest point. For example, "Remember that beautiful ess curve in Colton near that bridge?" How many of you remember going through a scenic ess curve when on vacation or traveling? I can remember several and we accepted them as part of the route. We also noted when an s curve was straightened, to our dismay. We have too many raceways now, so leave the curve alone. Sun, Mar 7, 2010 8:23 AM
24. Given the current state budget deficit, the boss and his underlings should eat ground beef instead of steak. Sun, Mar 7, 2010 8:10 AM
25. Why is it so important to fix the S curve now. NYS could use this money for more meaningful things. This road can wait. It's been there for years, what's a few more. Sun, Mar 7, 2010 4:59 AM
26. if they (state) can hold off another yr that would be better. Its not like it has to be done right away 1 more yr isnt going to make a difference. Sun, Mar 7, 2010 12:00 AM
27. if the state has that much money why dont they help out some of the poor town ships with bad road like Hermon or better yet help the American farmer the good old USA has been prodding for many years. It wont matter anyways they will do what ever government feels like doing. it wont change until we are nuke or china takes over. Sat, Mar 6, 2010 10:18 PM
28. waste of money Sat, Mar 6, 2010 5:15 PM
29. Not at this time I am sure that money could be better spent helping struggling small businesses to stay afloat and to keep their current employees. This would help to rebuild our economy here in the North Country Sat, Mar 6, 2010 3:16 PM
30. What a waste of tax dollars, wake up people it shows there are funds for everything,we pay taxes because we are used to paying.we will save money on this job because they will hire non-union workers. Sat, Mar 6, 2010 2:23 PM
31. I feel that this will increase the accidents by the state putting this kind of money in. This area is already known for the accidents and deaths toll. If what there works why change it . The money can be used to save jobs or educate our children. Sat, Mar 6, 2010 12:54 PM
32. yes this project is necessary it hard to maneuver a big truck such as a tractor trailer through the s curves Ive had a trailer slide toward the dirt wall .. Sat, Mar 6, 2010 12:53 PM
33. Use the money to help people get other jobs Sat, Mar 6, 2010 11:58 AM
34. Ogdensburg Correctional should be closed too. This is a burden to our state. The State Highway 56 is fine the way it is.. Sat, Mar 6, 2010 11:54 AM 35. Adding a slower speed limit wood cost a lot less! Sat, Mar 6, 2010 11:47 AM 36. Enough people have died here Sat, Mar 6, 2010 10:48 AM
37. Absolutely not... the "curve" is safer now than it was before...granted it is slightly inconvenient to wait but there are far more important projects to get to before this one is put on a schedule. Sat, Mar 6, 2010 10:44 AM
38. Certainly not as necessary as Madrid's bridge; but for residents who use this road everyday; I would think necessary is an appropriate choice. Also, if the money is not spent to assist our area; where would you prefer it be spent? Sat, Mar 6, 2010 9:41 AM
39. The curve is not a problem Sat, Mar 6, 2010 9:38 AM
40. Are you kidding? The traffic light that is there now works great! Spend the money on public schools. Sat, Mar 6, 2010 7:38 AM
41. It's been that way for years and that's a lot of money, can't it be put to better use? put up more caution lights or something...where is the money coming from in this bad economy..is it borrowed from China ? Fri, Mar 5, 2010 9:24 PM
42. Extremely dangerous and need to make the changes for safety Fri, Mar 5, 2010 8:51 PM 43. Where in the world does this S CURVE and S TURN as one paper reported come from? This stretch of road has been called the Letter S for years and years. Reporters need to get with the program. Fri, Mar 5, 2010 8:03 PM
44. Say WHAT? Not any more than the toll booths (+) DOT is going to undertake in Ogdensburg... What part of "NYS is broke" don't you understand! Fri, Mar 5, 2010 7:57 PM
45. This should have been done years ago! Fri, Mar 5, 2010 7:51 PM
46. Once again $$ going down the drain! Fri, Mar 5, 2010 6:48 PM 47. Good grief! This is probably part of the "Obama" jobs bill. Probably will create 5 jobs for $6,100,000! Sound familiar? Fri, Mar 5, 2010 6:15 PM
48. Not as this time,,,the system that is in place now is 100% better than it was ..... save the money.... but on the downside if they dont use it there they will spend it on something else... Fri, Mar 5, 2010 5:52 PM
49. I travel this road often, and it would be much safer to sraighten the curves out. Fri, Mar 5, 2010 4:15 PM 50. We need the money for other important things Fri, Mar 5, 2010 3:47 PM 51. What a waste! Fri, Mar 5, 2010 2:58 PM
52. I think that if the road is not a major safety problem, then most people would agree that they would rather deal with a little aggravation of having a not so great road, rather than see our schools having to cut teachers and programs and making our children suffer. Fri, Mar 5, 2010 2:02 PM 53. I think the money could be used for a better road program in St Lawrence Co, Fri, Mar 5, 2010 1:42 PM 54. Plain and simple - They are out of their mind! As everyone well knows this project will be over budget guaranteed. When times get better by all means fix it and fix it right, but for now its an idiotic idea and plan. People just have to learn to drive responsibly! Fri, Mar 5, 2010 1:39 PM
55. no, no, no, no, no! We need jobs and to get Paterson out of office! Fri, Mar 5, 2010 11:27 AM 56. The engineers say that taking away the two curves and making four curves will be safer. How is that possible? It seems to us that the lights are working real well and right in line with our economy. Slow down and enjoy the view of our most rural roadways. Fri, Mar 5, 2010 10:23 AM
57. This project not only is necessary but is also way overdue. The "s-curve" has been dangerous for years and now with the current one lane bridge and light system, travel on Hwy 56 has become burdensome. Tourism in the area surely has been affected. The Colton area needs roads that provide safe and easy travel into the area to promote tourism. Fri, Mar 5, 2010 10:00 AM
58. Now why would people who can not even straighten themselves out try a road go figure Fri, Mar 5, 2010 9:27 AM
59. I think it is necessary, because it is a hazzard for the residents of the north country. Road and highway work is going on in almost all states, and I'm sure the Hwy 56 reconstruction project is just as necessary as highway work in other states. This is a gateway hwy to the north country and is traveled by many locals and tourist. This is necessary and essential for the development and economy of the north country. Fri, Mar 5, 2010 9:11 AM
60. With a projected budget deficit of $9 BILLION how could this project be necessary? How about paying the prison guards and all the other state workers their salaries and do the one thing that NY has never done: CUT BACK on entitlements! Fri, Mar 5, 2010 8:20 AM
61. Do it later when there is money in the budget. At present it is not a requirement. Fri, Mar 5, 2010 7:59 AM
62. This road (path) existed when the area was inhabited by Indians. It should be the lowest priority on the state's list of things to accomplish. Another one to five years will make no difference. Use the money to keep jobs or create jobs especially in the North Country. That is the highest priority. Fri, Mar 5, 2010 7:58 AM
63. If you lived there you would want it too. It's a heavy traveled road. and it would bring more business in Colton. I don't live in Colton I live in Raymondville but I support it. If the State doesn't spend it their they'll spent it down in N.Y.City. That's where all our mon3y goes anyways. We need more people up here to support these projects. Good luck Colton. Fri, Mar 5, 2010 7:57 AM
64. Absolutely not! This curve has been there for decades, and with the traffic lights it is now as safe as any road. The State has MANY other places for this money that would be much more beneficial...such as education, health-related services, etc. This curve could stay put until the economy is straightened out and the State has the extra money needed for that project. Fri, Mar 5, 2010 6:33 AM 65. I would have to say yes and that answer would be bases on the following premise. To date I most likely couldn't count on both hands the number of poor souls who lost their lives there in the past not to mention the near misses we never hear about. Is one life worth $1.6 million? I think I would have to say yes and perhaps even more than that. Fri, Mar 5, 2010 6:12 AM
66. it is good the way it is, having traffic stop at each end. It slows down the speed also Fri, Mar 5, 2010 6:02 AM
67. The current system is working just fine. It may add a few minutes on to your trip but oh well. The state needs the money for more important things which I hope for our sake is not fatter wallets in Albany. Fri, Mar 5, 2010 1:11 AM
68. Its a lot safer like it is, with the stoplights. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 10:23 PM 69. What a dumb idea and a waste of money! It's worked just fine for over 100 years, and traffic probably hasn't increased much since the horse and buggy days. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 10:17 PM 70. What joke. Schools and health care are getting the ax and we're going to waste that much money! Thu, Mar 4, 2010 9:25 PM
71. i enjoy the curve-it slows every one done Thu, Mar 4, 2010 8:33 PM
72. I do not understand why NY State would piss away all the money to correct the wash out only to decided a few years later that it all needs to be changed again? Why was this not done the first time? Instead the taxpayer can pay for the project twice and we wonder why the deficit is so high your kidding right? Albany who in the hell is making these idiotic decisions? People really need to wake up and smell the coffee when electing these officials? With any luck at all Patterson will be throwing in the towel real soon... that would be a good start...... Thu, Mar 4, 2010 8:15 PM
73. This project is not necessary now or ever. The SH56 highway is in the "boonies" and doesn't require a fix because it is not broken. I am 73 years old and have welcomed this landmark each time I travel that direction. The stop lights work just fine, leave it alone.....! There have to be more critical issues than this.. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 7:10 PM
74. There are better places to spend (or not spend) this money with the current financial status of NYS. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 6:32 PM
75. another waste of time and money but what else can we expect from wonderful new york state! Thu, Mar 4, 2010 6:12 PM
76. I think the cost is preposterous and typical of how our local governments get raped by the unions, but I think the project will save lives and injuries and property damage accidents. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 6:07 PM 77. Yes this proposal is a good idea and would be very nice although the problem is this project should not need to be so expensive this project should only cost at maximum of 2 million if there was as much b.s. around. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 6:03 PM
78. What an incredible waste of money - no wonder our country is going bankrupt! Thu, Mar 4, 2010 6:02 PM 79. The S curve can stay right where it is. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 3:42 PM
80. This is a waste when there are so many other needed projects crying out for funds. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 3:13 PM
81. This is not a necessary project that money could go a long way put to use somewhere else. This is a total waste of money. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 2:28 PM
82. This curve has been in place for years and should be left as is .drivers need to slow down and enjoy the scenery in this beautiful area. Spend the money on parks and campsites Thu, Mar 4, 2010 2:11 PM
83. Absolutely not. These curves are inconvenient but with the traffic lights they are also acceptable. There are many other ways that are much more important and serve a larger population that this money can be used. Besides, the "S" curves are a landmark for the Colton area. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 1:46 PM
84. It would be nice to have a straighter highway, but while NY State is short of funds and looking for ways to save, this has to be considered an unnecessary project. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 1:28 PM
85. Use the money and fix some of the roads that need repairs. The S curve has worked just fine for years. If it ain't broke don't fix it! Thu, Mar 4, 2010 1:27 PM
86. ABSOLUTELY...............our infrastructure is collapsing in front of our eyes. This is the only State Route that traverses through the heart of St. Lawrence County. We need this route for commerce, travel and recreation. Lets all grow up and realize that we have to continue to improve while realizing that we cant spend money on "ridiculous" projects. This is a must.......a need for this depressed region of our state. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 1:16 PM
87. It works just fine as it is and is perfectly safe. The cost is prohibitive. Six million for one mile? No way. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 11:57 AM
88. I love that S Curve and drive that route several times a year on my motorcycle. It's a landmark and should be left alone. It's just a great Curve. The only inconvenience is stopping at the Traffic Light and waiting a couple of minutes for it to turn green. Spending 6.1 Million dollars is a stupid idea. This route is not a Interstate Route. Nobody can be in that much of a hurry that they can't stop for 2 minutes at the light. NYS will never spend that kind of money for upstate NY unless it was connected to Ft. Drum. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 11:26 AM
89. For safety reasons alone this project is very much needed. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 11:18 AM 90. The only way this is necessary is if the road is actually a hazard for us. At this time I do not believe it is a hazard, maybe an inconvenience, but as to my knowledge, not hazardous. We (the state) need to be thinking more about our financial situation. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 11:11 AM
91. Put the 6.1 Million towards the Interstate 98 project. . . . something that will help the entire region instead of one small town. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 10:55 AM
92. The "S" curve is something we have all dealt with and hasn't been a major problem that I have seen - does the amount of traffic on this highway really warrant the expenditure of this much money at this time. I think there are a lot of places this money could go that are a much higher priority Thu, Mar 4, 2010 10:48 AM
93. While the "S" Curve is annoying and sometimes time consuming, it is not worth the $6.1 million dollars to repair at this time. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 10:37 AM 94. A bigger bang for the buck can be used elsewhere. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 9:40 AM
95. Put local Colton people to work then yes Thu, Mar 4, 2010 9:01 AM
96. The lights at the s curve are sufficient in controlling traffic, that should not be revamped just to explain were money can go since we do not have enough to open all state parks in NYS. People need these parks for recreation to relieve the stress of living in strenuous times Thu, Mar 4, 2010 8:59 AM
97. The money would be better spent on the rooftop highway which would bring more jobs to upstate NY. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 8:45 AM
98. Focus on the "roof top" higway! That will make more sense. It will give this area the shot we need to get this distressed place on the map! Please don't get sidetracted & miss the boat here. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 8:18 AM
99. Absolutely not ! Just one more thing to indicate the stupid spending government does. They clearly are not thinking ! How many other places would that money be better spent ? Thu, Mar 4, 2010 8:10 AM
100. There is a need for this project, there is and has been a problem there since it was first used by the settlers, although it may not need the extent of work that is proposed. The road and bridge could be widened, the banks be shaved back, and for about 1/3 the cost, you would have decent fix that would not break the bank! BUT! I am not an engineer, and am not privi to the information that was gathered by the DOT that was used to determine the proper fix for the situation. We have to hope and believe that these people are doing the right thing for our communities that would be impacted by fixing the problem, or just wasting money putting a quick fix to a never ending problem. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 7:42 AM 101. If the bridge has been inspected and deemed unsafe, then replace the bridge only. As far as the rest of the project, NO. With the addition of traffic signals and one way traffic, this has become a much safer road. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 7:40 AM
102. Isn't $6.1 million expensive for ONE mile of road? Thu, Mar 4, 2010 7:24 AM
103. Boondoggle just like everything else in this taxed to the eyeballs state Thu, Mar 4, 2010 6:22 AM 104. This project is not necessary what so ever! $6.1 Million to fix something that works fine now. Yeah, the state wants to close Ogdensburg Correctional and destroy hundreds of jobs because it needs to save money. But, let's throw it at a useless project like this. Figures... Thu, Mar 4, 2010 5:32 AM 105. Been nothing but a death trap for years and years. Why it was made like that who will ever know! Thu, Mar 4, 2010 1:17 AM
106. The timing is wrong. This money should go to the four-lane highway effort if it should go to anything. Thu, Mar 4, 2010 12:39 AM 107. I drive truck and even though the traffic light is a pain I prefer it that way. I am more certain I can take the bends and i know no one is on the other side coming at me. if the state has all the money to spend i think there are better places than at the s curves in south Colton. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 10:08 PM 108. I think they could use the funding to fix the pits in the existing ones. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 10:00 PM
109. It's not really necessary but if we don't use the funds for it they will simply use it for some other unnecessary project downstate. So we might as well accept it. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 9:59 PM 110. Since the temporary traffic light has been placed there, I have not heard of any major incidents! Imagine what that money cold be used for in education! You never hear about any cuts in DOT! Wed, Mar 3, 2010 8:24 PM
111. or we could just say no and give our sad leader a bonusbecause for he soon will be unemployed . its a huge price maybe nyc needs this money more Wed, Mar 3, 2010 7:59 PM
112. Typical New York State. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 7:44 PM
113. no it is so not needed leave it alone it has worked that way for years.... Wed, Mar 3, 2010 7:33 PM
114. The road does not need to be straighten, they only need to fix the end that was washed out and make that end two lanes again the rest of the road is still there the same it has been since the road was last done. This would solve the problem of one way traffic. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 7:11 PM
115. Not at this time. There are more important things the state should devote its resources to. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 6:48 PM
116. It will put people back to work and decrease the number of people on un-employment, which helps decrease the deficit. It will also allow people who were collecting un-employment the ability to pay there taxes which will also help the deficit. Anything that creates jobs is a good thing and fix the poor roads in the area I say do it! Wed, Mar 3, 2010 6:38 PM
117. The curve around the mountainous area is part of the scenery and heritage of the beauty of nature. Leave the natural surroundings alone. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 6:38 PM
118. As a person who travels through the S-Curve almost every day I certainly see the need for it. I have met vehicles coming through the curve which means people sometime run the red light perhaps out of frustration by the waiting time. So from at least of safety point of view I welcome the improvement. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 6:36 PM
119. I have traveled through the 'S-Curve" for many years and the way that it is set up now is perfectly fine. It is safe and only takes a few minutes to travel through.
I find it unbelievable that this waste of tax payers money is even being considered.
We are in a free fall and this type of ignorance makes me ashamed to be a New York State resident. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 6:33 PM
120. It was needed 25 years ago. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 6:29 PM
121. Why not use that money towards the 4 lane highway that would open the northern New York area up to tourist. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 5:46 PM
122. The "Letter S", was preserved once before by demand when Route 56 south of Potsdam was modernized (late 1970'?). If not left original, the "flavor" of this scenic wonder shouter be preserved! I 've been luck enough to visit at least part of each of our lower 48 States. Some of what I have scene is truly worthy of the word "AWESOME!" The "Letter S" belongs on a list of "National Geologic and Scenic Wonders." As far as the economics of repairing this stretch of road now are concerned it is no different from what I first noted in the later 1960's in a very wealthy area of Long Island, New York. Many who have the means to contribute more to society than they do are ("to be polite") reluctant to do so, as it may mean they would have to postpone the purchase of, or forgo ever having some of the "luxuries" they could do without, while not really noticing the difference. I saw it on Long Island where people had a poorly built, poorly maintained school in a district where the budget was always in danger of being defeated. Many of the most vocal, when it came to calling for cuts in spending had cars worth more than twice what the average teacher was paid and some had land (Yes on Long Island!) and homes worth a good proportion of the value of the school building and the land it sat on! I saw this "disease" spread to suburban Rochester, New York by the early 1970's and to this area by the mid to late 1970's! Yes there are many who can barely pay their bills, or worse (way too many!). I've seen that side up close all too often and, but for the circumstances I could have been among them when I was lost Tenured Teaching Positions (due to program cuts) 3 times in 20 years. Were it not for good fortune, the crippling disability that caught up with me would have left me destitute. Every time a job is, lost it causes other's too be endangered. When a few are lost, that cause more to be lost. I had the privilege of asking a close friend of my father (who survived the Great Depression and WWII before escaping Germany) who was an excellent financial manager (for public successful service organizations) and retired Professor of Economics, "Isn't cutting jobs and programs the exact opposite of what needs to be done do delvelop and maintain a sound, strong economy?" His answers were usually a long and "professorial." On that occasion he, simply said, "Yes, of course." During the Great Depression countless roads, schools, bridges, dams, etc. were built in the name of putting people back to work doing things that were needed. There was a great deal of criticism at the time, of course, but most of those projects served us well for the remainder of the 20th Century with many continuing to do so. Through the use of sound fiscal policy and creative and sound financing, projects such as that needed to repair Route 56 at the "Letter S" can not only be done, but can contribute greatly to our abilities to get through these really touch times and have a better local economy in the very near future, while Helping to build a solid foundation for a sound economy over the long term. Since the Viet Nam era (all I understand from having seen events unfold) the so called periods of prosperity in the country have been "built" on "foundations" as unsound as the "house of straw" that was blown down by "the Big Bad Wolf!" We cannot afford to do without having projects such as that to repair Route 56 carried forward! Wed, Mar 3, 2010 5:45 PM
123. Save the money, save the prisons Wed, Mar 3, 2010 5:31 PM
124. Yes it is necessary, but not now. There are far more pressing issues like Ogdensburg Prison closing and State Parks closing. The S curve works . . . poorly, but it works. Fix it when the budget allows. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 4:04 PM
125. What it comes down to is do you want to pay to straighten out a section of road or excess taxes on soda. 6 Million can be used somewhere else for the time being, this section of road isn't fun but it isn't really dangerous since it became single lane. Before that yes, I drive a large box truck and it wasn't really fun to navigate around the curve, especially when you came around the curve and Seaway Timber was coming the other way. But one lane is fine for now. Unless Obama wants to fund it since it is shovel ready, we NYs can live with some curves in our roads. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 3:51 PM
126. I enjoy the S-curve...why make everything cookie-cutter all the time? Wed, Mar 3, 2010 3:31 PM
127. No. They just put money into it to open it back up a few years ago. It is not hurting anything the way it is. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 3:26 PM
128. I would rather see 6.1 million put back into the school aid for our children's education. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 3:21 PM
129. No this is definitely not necessary, use the 6-7 million dollars toward keeping Ogdensburg corr. facility open. I use this route to go to Tupper Lake all the time. Its not perfect but the current one lane brigade is fine until the state gets its finances straightened out, whether that be 3 years from now or twenty. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 3:01 PM
130. No! Given the unemployment rate in this area, the disparaging amount of children who in going to school each day receive their only meal, the lack of accessibility for many in the area to medical care...the list goes on and on we should absolutely not spend a dime on straightening a perfectly good road! If there is a special interest group with a hand in this, they should speak up to the public. Could one reason be that the logging trucks need the road to be straightened? Too many deals are made behind closed doors with regard to our money. Teachers contribute so much to this area and unfortunately they have been underpaid for far to long. Maybe the Village Board of Potsdam, with all of its misguided land and water turbine purchases, should chime in with its comments on how to spend money wisely! Wed, Mar 3, 2010 2:46 PM
131. Yes; this is a very dangerous section of higway, which over the years has seriously injured and killed many people. The price seems inflated, however if it saved you or your family members from serious injury or death, it would certainly be worth it. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 2:31 PM
132. if they don't use the money for this project it will go to someplace else anyway. we need to do improvements to our infrastructure in the north country. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 2:23 PM
133. Most money is targeted to specific "areas"; therefore, more than likely this money can only be spent on transportation and roadway construction. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 2:01 PM
134. How many more folks need to die on that corner. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 1:59 PM
135. Anyone who travels this stretch of road has to admit that it is not safe. I avoid it. Have you ever gone around it before the light was put there? For many of you the answer is yes. What was it like to meet a tractor trailer in the middle of it, or an emergency vehicle on the way to a fire or accident? Now think about if you were involved in an accident half way between there and Route 3...you have to wait for an ambulance that might have to wait a couple minutes at that light to avoid an accident. Those minutes could make the difference between life and death. Not only does the "S-Curve" need to be straightened and a new bridge put in place...the curve south of the "s-curve" needs to be fixed before there are anymore deaths on it. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 1:09 PM 136. I don't have any problems with the s curve the way it is now. It's historic anyway, leave it alone Wed, Mar 3, 2010 12:52 PM
137. That S-Curve, although a slight inconvenience with its current stop-light configuration, is not unsafe, and DEFINITELY should not be part of the state's budget. Let's give that 6.1 million dollars to helping people find and keep jobs! Wed, Mar 3, 2010 12:49 PM 138. Let me preface this by saying that I own several properties in the Colton/South Colton area and I STILL think this is something we can probably live without at this time. The S curve has been there forever and unless people are impaired, it can be navigated without problem UNLESS this is to prevent a future washout which crippled EVERYONE trying to go southeast on 56 - remember that 56 is the ONLY southbound route out of the North Country to the Adirondacks so it depends on the reason for it........ Wed, Mar 3, 2010 11:32 AM 139. The only people that think this is a good idea are waiting at that light right now. There has to be at least $6.1 million better uses for that money. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 11:13 AM 140. I feel that at this time with our economy like it is that it would be money wasted. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 11:13 AM 141. It is absolutely fine the way it is! We can purchase many more traffic lights for $6.1 million instead of messing with something that isn't broken Wed, Mar 3, 2010 10:59 AM 142. This is a stupid waste of money which could be used for more vital things such as education, health, housing, economic development, feeding the hungry, etc. Road construction should not be the first place the government looks to "create jobs", which is a lie anyway. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 10:25 AM 143. HELL NO.........leave the s-curve...It's a historical site.... lol ...It' been there for 50+ years that I can remember....... Wed, Mar 3, 2010 10:25 AM 144. Put the money into the State Parks! Wed, Mar 3, 2010 10:20 AM
145. Eue to the extreme danger involved with traffic its about time! can we afford it? NO! Wed, Mar 3, 2010 10:07 AM
146. It has only been dumb luck that more people have not been killed on this section of road. Due to the fact that we have, potentially 8 months a year when we have snow/ice, and then morning fog in the other months of the year due to the proximity of water running next to the curves, the situation is too dangerous to simply keep the status quo. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 9:45 AM 147. First and foremost it is the only North-South State Highway through St. Lawrence county. It also will contribute direct jobs (on the project) in addition to supplier/vendor positions for materials incorporated in the project, food and lodging for workers, sales tax generated by any purchase not included in the project. It will eliminate the waste of fuel and time with the current situation. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 9:33 AM
148. Just another waste of money, that curve has been there forever and it is clearly marked, now it has traffic lights, if there is an accident now, it is not an accident but human stupidity Wed, Mar 3, 2010 9:26 AM 149. I really don't see a need for it, the most I've been delayed was a couple of minutes waiting for the green light. That's not going to hurt anyone. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 9:21 AM 150. It will save lives and make the road less dangerous to drive. In the winter and rainy conditions it is extremely dangerous. I believe we should try to prevent deaths by car accidents. Let's protect our people from being maimed or dead. Make our roads a safer place for everyone's sake. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 9:03 AM
151. Even in times of budget shortfalls safety of the citizens always needs to be considered. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 8:56 AM
152. How many years has the curve been there? Wed, Mar 3, 2010 8:36 AM 153. Yes, we are in a deficit. However, we need to maintain safety for New Yorkers. 56 and the "S-Curve" are in poor condition and need to be fixed. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 8:29 AM 154. The road is fine the way it is. Give the money to me. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 8:26 AM
155. The current set up is working just fine, and the delay caused by the lights is minimal. Even if the state was flush with cash, I would think that this project is a waste. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 8:05 AM 156. I would rather see the energies go toward a major highway instead of Rt. 56. 6.1 Million Dollars would be a start to begin the major highway that needs to be done. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 7:43 AM 157. What about all the money that was spent after the water damage a few years back? It is much safer now with the traffic light on both ends. With the financial problems the state is facing REALLY let's get our priorities in order. Another disgrunted taxpayer Wed, Mar 3, 2010 7:42 AM 158. They should take this money and put it towards the rooftop highway. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 7:37 AM
159. The road is not heavily enough traveled to warrant such an expenditure. Eliminating the five minute wait doesn't scream for a $6.1 million improvement. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 7:34 AM
160. HUGE waste of money. NYS has other more important problems to "straighten out" than this short, historic stretch of highway. Here's an idea: SLOW DOWN! Wed, Mar 3, 2010 7:12 AM 161. Now is not the time to repair this road. We have been using a work around up until now. The money could be used elsewhere or not used at all. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 7:08 AM 162. It's about time! Wed, Mar 3, 2010 7:00 AM
163. However the expanded steel plated bridge should be replaced due to it being slippery when wet. Being on a curve imposes an even greater safety risk. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 6:56 AM 164. Yes, but how many local jobs will this project create? Wed, Mar 3, 2010 6:55 AM 165. no no no no, ridiculous, so you have to slow down for a big curve, add two minutes to a drive...what a colossal waste of money that we don't have Wed, Mar 3, 2010 6:54 AM 166. If the money is going to be spent, then spend it here in the North Country. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 6:34 AM
167. When this was proposed originally it could have been done for much less than $6.1 mil, so now if it is postponed, where will the dollar amount escalate too and what politician will have enough clout to get it off the back burner and do the job. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 6:16 AM
168. If isnt spent on the '' s "" curve the state will spend it elsewhere reguardless of the states budget deficit. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 6:15 AM
169. This is a waste NYS dollars. Given the economic status and high unemployment rate, that money could be used to encourage job growth, especially in St. Lawrence County. I live in the area and travel thru the s-curve 6-7 times weekly. It is now the best it has ever been. Speeds are reduced, accidents are reduced and travel is not compromised. The red light gives a chance to enjoy the beauty in the area. I question the thought process in the upper levels in NYS, who obliviously have had no personal impact due to economic issues. They manage OUR budget inadequately. Time to change government leaders. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 5:53 AM 170. does this question even make any sense?? especially when prefaced with"given the state budget deficit"... of course this does not need to be done now! maybe not even ever... i can think of 6.1 million reasons this does not need to happen...just for starters the hundreds of people who are looking at losing their jobs at the state prisons because of the state deficit! Wed, Mar 3, 2010 5:39 AM 171. The current setup with traffic light seems to be working well. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 5:37 AM 172. Another bone headed decision by the state DOT. Just reduce the speed limit and save our hard earned tax dollars. Wed, Mar 3, 2010 5:22 AM 173. Lets keep spending money we do not have that is the way to show our children to budget. Well I guess there is always bankruptcy. So go ahead and just keep spending that money and make up excuses as to why we keep going further in debt. Good role models. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 11:21 PM 174. That bridge was just replaced not even ten years ago due to the flooding it is ridiculous to replace the bridge right now with the problems in state government and all the deficits. That money could be better spent in helping defray the high cost of health care, living in St. Lawrence county and knowing that most of the county depends on public assistance and Medicaid wouldn't that money be more effective used to help the working poor and needy who make minimal wages and cannot afford medical insurance, and there are many. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 10:39 PM 175. The engineer plan calls for almost a mile construction through two massive hills and installing a massive bridge all the while touting their huge earth moving machines like it's something to brag about. All this to bury us in debt just to fix a nuisance. Are we trying to see if we can catch up to California's debt ? I think the state could save about 5 million by just cutting the hill back about 25 ft on the two center curve banks thereby widening the road. Then they could take the 5 million and keep the Ogdensburg prison open saving hundreds of badly needed north country jobs. Dale Robar Tue, Mar 2, 2010 9:48 PM
176. The delay at the stoplight is annoying, but waiting for 2 minutes to cross the bridge is a better option than paying higher taxes! Tue, Mar 2, 2010 9:38 PM
177. makes no sense. slow down Tue, Mar 2, 2010 9:19 PM
178. no. let our rural roads go back to gravel surfaces. They are much easier to maintain and economical. The worst thing that could happen is that someone might need to slow down their driving. Straightening out the road would only make people drive faster. Keep the curve and keep them slow. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 8:57 PM
179. You have to be kidding me...of course it's not necessary! It's being controlled by a light which has cut down on accidents like 100%. So you have to wait a couple of minutes
big deal. Oh, and partially straighten it, what does that mean, we'll have to drive over a steep mountain rather than a winding road? Or are they going to tunnel through it? Good grief, there's better ways to waste tax payers money. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 8:55 PM
180. I think they could spend their money better in these tough times. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 7:43 PM 181. I travel that spot a lot, but it is NOT that busy that it needs a change. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 7:37 PM
182. No. The road is safely passable now. Some folks might not want to slow down to 20 to navigate it, or have to stop at the light. Too bad. That money could be better spent on our local schools, saving jobs that are going to be lost over the next few years, at our children's expense. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 7:34 PM
183. This is a crazy waste of taxpayers dollars. When Doug Hoffman is in office he will work harder than anyone to stop this senseless abuse of the working Taxpayer Tue, Mar 2, 2010 7:19 PM
184. Leave it alone. It is a natural characteristic that most of us are quite fond of. It also happens to be a built-in speed bump that slows down the traffic coming through our small community. There are so many better ways that the $6.1 million could be used, especially in St. Lawrence County. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 7:08 PM
185. What an incredible waste of our tax dollars. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 6:45 PM
186. that is a high price to pay can't they try to use local contractors try to give there price. There price might be lower then the state has and it would help more people in the north. Or have contracter from other county or states Tue, Mar 2, 2010 5:57 PM
187. no no no no, completely ridiculous. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 5:53 PM
188. Take it easy on the spending for a few years. People are in jeopardy of losing their jobs. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 5:52 PM
189. Are they out of their mind? I think they should put that money into the hands of the small business owners and see how many jobs will be created, a lot more then just fixing a non-existing problem. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 5:05 PM
190. This project does not need to be done! When one budgets, they plan the best expenditure of money. This is not the best plan. At the February 24th Public Informational Meeting, we were told that the estimated construction cost is now $7.0 million and sure to rise above that. I am the 4th closest resident to the Letter S curve and travel through it a minimum of 4 times a day. Since the state has placed traffic control lights at each entrance to the curves due to the new, single lane bridge now over Cold Brook, it has become much safer and drivers speed greatly reduced. The only reason that I have heard for the straightening of the curve is that the Letter S is a nuisance to drivers. A nuisance? If slowing down and being careful is a nuisance, then by all means, annoy me all you like! I would rather you and I be annoyed for 3 or 4 minutes then for you or I to drive fast and possibly get in an accident and kill yourself, or one of my children. If the state (i.e.: you and me) wants to budget money on a road project, spend it on the curves less than a mile south of the Letter S, near my home, where numerous fatalities have happened due to the winding curves where drivers speed can not be controlled, no matter how many warning signs the state installs! A nuisance? Tell that to family and friends of those killed on these other dangerous curves. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 5:01 PM 191. i think for the amount of traffic on rte 56 in that area, we could continue the with slight inconvenience of waiting for 2 or 3 minutes for the light to change, actually this part of the highway reduce the amount of accidents. why not put the money towards improving pavement on north country highways. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 5:00 PM 192. And neither is the Ogdensburg City School District's $60 million renovation project. Talk about a waste of money! That school is already monstrously large. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 4:51 PM
193. What a pile of crap! I thought our state was having financial problems? Thats no different then me...broke...bank book in the red and I call lowes and have new carpeting put in, do I want it? sure, is it necessary that I do it now seeing I'm having financial hardships? HELL NO! There are several other places this money could go at this point, somebody needs a reality check! Tue, Mar 2, 2010 4:31 PM 194. Absolutely not! We cannot afford any higher taxes, so the state needs to spend less. This project would be a good first one to cut. The South Colton curve is fameous and should be promoted as a local atttaction. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 4:22 PM
195. It has been the same way for years, I think it can wait a little longer. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 3:57 PM
196. Leave the "S" curve be. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 3:18 PM
197. This is actually one of the roads that needs something done with it. There are other roads that need it also. But like always, they work on roads that do not need it. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 3:09 PM 198. What a waste of money! It works the way it is now. Sure, there is a slight hold up for people stopped at the light but it is a small price to pay if it means saving millions of dollars when NY is already in financial dire straits. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 3:08 PM
199. Not with all the cuts to jobs, education and facilities that the current Governor would like to make. The curve has been there a long time. Why now? Tue, Mar 2, 2010 3:05 PM
200. I travel this road frequently, and do not mind the stop light at all. It slows down the logging trucks as well as freight trucks who would otherwise take all curves along this route too fast. I feel safer the way it is. There is nothing wrong with it...save jobs, parks, scrap this plan! Shirley Premo Tue, Mar 2, 2010 2:50 PM
201. If the bridge is safe, I would say no. The stop lights are a little inconvenient. But, for $6.1 million dollars, in this economy, I don't mind inconvenient. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 2:23 PM
202. this project should have been done sixty years ago. one could say "not now" , but i'd rather see money spent on this than on some of the stupid and foolish projects politicians call economic stimu-less. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 2:16 PM
203. What a ridiculous waste of money, it works fine the way it is, save the money and put it towards the rooftop highway. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 2:10 PM
204. We shouldn't be worried about the state or funding since much of this comes from the Federal Taxes on gasoline. The Feds pony up about 80% of the funding in most cases. The states pick up the bulk of the remainder with the counties/towns picking up a small portion. This is all formula based and will probably come from the remaining stimulus monies in the next couple of years. The state will also recover the bulk of their funds in the way of income and sales taxes for this project. It will provide better infrastructure, it will provide jobs in this horrible economy, and it will fix a centuries old safety problem. Unfortunately a couple of families may be displaced with the road relocation (I didn't see the map however the small green house on the north east side of the creek at the turn will most likely be removed or relocated). Is this really necessary for the generations of families that have called that section home on the north side of the bowl? Personally the hollow created by the two eskers that make up the curve around the creek are beautiful. I would prefer that they reroute the road around the Snow Bowl and leave the existing road for local use only. Then the traffic there is so minimal that a one lane bridge becomes a quaint attraction. They can move Rt 56 to the east of the bowl and straighten out that 5 mile stretch from the bowl to the flats. Based on the topo maps of the area, this would be an easier route for the road than thru the narrows. This will then create more revenue for the state with all the speeding tickets the Troopers can write with the longer straight aways...... Tue, Mar 2, 2010 2:04 PM
205. It's about time they got to it! People HAVE to commute in this area to get to work, school, etc. The people in Colton should hve been campaigning and making noise for it's necessity long ago. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 1:38 PM
206. How much traffic does it actually move. Lets focus our spending on more urgent projects. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 1:29 PM
207. A total waste of money! Tue, Mar 2, 2010 1:09 PM
208. This is absolutely ridiculous. The taxpayers should have control over how "our" money is spent. What is wrong with our officials. They need to remember how they got their positions. What a let down they are. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 1:01 PM
209. In light of the current deficit I would think the couple of minutes travellers must endure for the one lane bridge don't necessitate this kind of expenditure. The money could be better spent elsewhere. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 12:35 PM 210. For 6.1 million dollars they could give each and every resident of St. Lawrence County (there are 110,000 of us) a $50 bill in return for the inconvenience of waiting a extra minute or two at the stop light down there in South Colton. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 12:34 PM 211. has the state ever looked at the main road that runs through canton ? this is the worst piece of state highway around! spend 6 million on a road seldom traveled, or fix a main hwy such as this! Tue, Mar 2, 2010 12:34 PM
212. I travel this route numerous times a year, and have never seen more than 3 vehicles there waiting at once. Waste of money! No wonder we are so far in debt! Tue, Mar 2, 2010 12:23 PM
213. It can wait. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 12:05 PM 214. old road worked fine for years why build a super highway when the old way worked fine just have troopers enforce the speed limit instead of watching the people speed by their radar unit Tue, Mar 2, 2010 11:59 AM
215. no not as long as the current one is still usable Tue, Mar 2, 2010 11:58 AM 216. A boonie boondoggle. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 11:57 AM 217. The minor inconvenience to the few people that travel that road is not worth $6.1 million. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 11:48 AM
218. This is a poor time to spend money to reduce a sharp curve in the road. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 11:47 AM
219. You just have to be patient and wait for the light to change. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 11:43 AM 220. The project may be necessary, but I hardly think that $6.1 million is necessary to accomplish taking the S out of the curve. That seems pretty exhorbitant for one mile of roadway with a bridge. Come on, what kind of an estimate is that? Tue, Mar 2, 2010 11:18 AM
221. The road is working just fine with the new stoplights and all. Unbelievable that the state is that worried about a road when they want to cut school aid and medicaid. I think there are bigger things to worry about. The road is just fine. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 10:42 AM 222. Fix the county and village roads first. They are in terrible shape. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 10:35 AM 223. it can wait till the state is in better shape it is not an emergency situation Tue, Mar 2, 2010 10:26 AM 224. State dollars need to be better spent, but it still will all boil down to what politician has his/her fingers the deepest in the corruption bowl. Albany needs to get back on track and open their eyes ! Tue, Mar 2, 2010 10:25 AM
225. fix the morley potsdam road! Tue, Mar 2, 2010 10:23 AM 226. Let's use the money for a better purpose... state parks maybe. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 10:19 AM 227. I'd rather see the $6 million spread around St. Lawrence County for road improvements. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 10:04 AM 228. NO! Let's get our priorities straight! They should give the money to me. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 9:54 AM
229. The South Colton "S-curve has been there a long time -the project can wait. Could there the a correlation between this project and the construction of power lines along State Route 56 as authorized by the voters last November? Tue, Mar 2, 2010 9:44 AM
230. with the stop lights, the curve is safer in that people have to slow down and stop. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 9:39 AM
231. There are bridges in NYS which are in need of immediate repair. They should spend the money on repairing the bridges they identified as in need of serious repair. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 9:36 AM
232. This should have been done years prior, they should go all the way to the plains. A lot of people have died along this short stretch of highway. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 9:25 AM
233. it is very modern and rightfully slowes traffic in a well controled manor. I believe it is a lower merit than other items. Better to fix up the intenational bridge at Ogdesnburg-Johnstown for commerce. Better to keep Start parks open on a self sustaining basis to increase tourism. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 9:14 AM
234. It is a project that has been in the works since the colapse of the last bridge .The cost of all the work that has been done to get this project underway would have been for a waste of time and money the DOT needs to complete what has already started. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 9:12 AM
235. i travel that road usually pulling a trailer. it was a little hairy then. now that it's one way at a time with the traffic light its a lot better. the only thing is with the people that have to travel to and from work everyday. maybe someone find out even if its standing at the light and find out how many people use it one or two times a day. still 6 million. is it worth it right now when so much talk of cutting programs that benifit schools and children's education. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 8:57 AM
236. It's needed, but not necessary - good schools and jobs are necessary. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 8:45 AM
237. It's been needed for several years. So, bite the bullet and get it done. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 8:43 AM
238. The road work needs to be done and it will give job oportunities for some. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 8:38 AM
239. No; that stretch of road is well-known, as are its dangers. The money could be put toward creating alternative public transportation in the county, which would benefit more people and help us create less dependence on the personal car, which would be good for the economy of the region and our families. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 8:26 AM
240. This is just another ridiculous unecessay project. $6.1. million when the state is so far in debt it will never get out even in my grandchildren's life time! The S curve works just fine the way it is. Everyone knows its there and drives accordingly. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 8:24 AM 241. When I don't have any money, I don't get to build things. I don't get it....jobs? Yes. The problem is, I can see higher priority items where they'd be of use. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 8:17 AM
242. Completely unnecessary! The "S-curve" was stabilized and reconstructed a few years ago when it washed out, and emergency funds where allocated from both federal and state governments. The current situation isn't the most practical but its working, why reconstruct something that is also serving its purpose safely? I think the $6.1 million could be better utilized for other projects. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 8:07 AM
243. Duh, how many have died there? Tue, Mar 2, 2010 7:43 AM
244. save money dont spend it on stupid bullcrap, help ny get out of dept.ny needs to open its eyes and let the people speak out.the question should be, can we let the people decide what we need in new york when it comes to our saftey on the roads? the goverment dont let us decide but yet Patterson keeps taxing us but still to this day he likes to waste money.lets get Hillary Clinton she would know what to do!leave Coltons history alone.its not necessary Tue, Mar 2, 2010 7:38 AM
245. STUPID and shortsighted. Why are they even considering this when they are so deep in debt already? Tue, Mar 2, 2010 7:35 AM
246. The Canton Village project is much more important. Main street through the Village is falling apart and carries much more traffic then the South Colton s-curve. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 7:30 AM
247. The system in place now works fine. This is the type of project that should be way down on the priority list if on it at all. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 7:28 AM
248. New York State has bigger fish to fry like fixing the government. Too bad we're about to lose the only governor of late who wasn't afraid to buck the system and fix what's wrong with this state. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 7:02 AM
249. These curves are part of the history of the road an the area. Leave them alone, save the energy consumer by the construction, save the hills an the money. Give the money to the animal shelters in the county. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 6:58 AM
250. This road has been like this for as long as I can remember. No one is complaining. What is the benefit of this project to the taxpayers? No wonder New York has such a budget deficit. It's time people in control of state finances think logically and realistically about how they spend our money! 251. keep ogdensburg prison open. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 6:25 AM
252. It costs time and money to sit there and wait, and we are one flood away from losing one of the four main arteries into and out of this county. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 6:04 AM
253. There is no question this project is absolutely necessary but as soon as it is done, make it a toll area. I understand President Obama is considering making all paved roads toll accessable so this would be an historic beginning. Tue, Mar 2, 2010 5:06 AM
254. Really, 6.1 million for 1 mile of highway? I can think of alot of other things that the state could use the money for. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:59 PM
255. HELL N.O. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:24 PM
256. I have traveled that route and find that the stop is not inconvient. They should leave the route as it is. it isn't hurting anyone, infact it is probably saving lives by only having the one lane traffic across the creek...Save the money for something that will benefit the county... Mon, Mar 1, 2010 10:23 PM 257. "If it ain't broken, don't fix it!" Unnecessary expense. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 10:15 PM 258. the (letter s )is an unofficial land mark. LEAVE IT ALONE. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 9:55 PM
259. If this project was necessary why wasn't it done a few years ago when the flood washed out the roadway and a new system was put in place with traffic lights etc. The system now in place is adequate. A great deal of money was spent to put the new system in place within the last three to four years. Not at this time - maybe 20 years down the road after the taxpayer has gotten full value for the money already spent. Then there is the inconvenience of construction. We already endured that with long delays and extensive detours during the last project. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 9:16 PM
260. Sure, the timing on the light needs work. But there are more pressing needs in the state, no? If the state wants to give 6.1 mil to the North County, give it to the schools. It if has to go to roads, pick one that has a car-sized pothole. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 8:49 PM
261. If it is something that can wait a few years when there is the money to spend then fine. But right now, cut that out instead of jobs! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 8:43 PM
262. This is not the time. The State should save the money and keep people working...keep Ogdensburg CF open for instance. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 8:42 PM
263. Absolutely not. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 8:36 PM
264. No- that curve has been there for decades. The light that is operating there now works fine. It would be a giant waste of money. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 8:04 PM
265. Absolutely not! That S-Curve is as much a landmark for South Colton as is Sunday Rock! Plus there are rarely accidents on that curve. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 7:57 PM
266. Come on now! The road has been like this since before I was even born. It is fine just the way it is. How about the dot spend some money on repaving roads that have humps and bumps as well as pot holes big enough to swallow a car? A few curves is nothing to spend 1.6 million for. Give me that amount and I sure I could spend it wisely! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 7:46 PM
267. The s curve is fine as it is now....NYS needs to fix some of the bridges that are in critical condition. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 7:37 PM
268. you should cut a hole right straight through the wall an straighten the road out an get rid of that light cause its a pain in the butt Mon, Mar 1, 2010 7:28 PM
269. This is not a high priority item - the traffic light is working right now. I think this project can wait. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 7:28 PM
270. The main reason we should invest money on reconstructing highways is safety and the upkeep it requires. The current solution to a previously unsafe S-curve has been wonderful, far and above what I expected it to be, as I travel it weekly. I would rather stop and wait my turn than to be fearful in facing the idiot drivers and oversize trucks that used to ply this section of roadway on my every trip. Why spend this money here when the same amount will keep our NYS Parks open for at least another year or more. And, as I've said elsewhere, only in the land of Albany budget excesses does this project make sense. SAY NO to this stupid plan -and yes to our Park system! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 7:22 PM
271. No Way No Way No Way! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 7:21 PM
272. better to use the money here than have the crooked politicians in albany spend it ! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 6:37 PM
273. That area is pretty dangerous in the winter. Other places have been redone when not needing it. Plus how many people will get work out of it. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 6:30 PM
274. We could wait but if another town is going to get money go for it Mon, Mar 1, 2010 6:24 PM
275. Absolutely NOT! This is so ridiculous... That money should of been put toward's our children's education's and the elderly for nursing care... A road come on how many year's has the s curve been there? Or to keep our prison's OPEN in the North Country! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 6:22 PM
276. And how many SUNY Professors are we laying off this week? Mon, Mar 1, 2010 6:10 PM
277. It is stupid to waste money straightening out this road. It has been like this for decades. All you have to do is SLOW DOWN! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 6:08 PM
278. "Not necessary", it seems to be working out the way it is. So you have to wait a few extra minutes, you don't have to worry about a fast driver, a drunken driver or a log truck coming around the curves on the wrong side and smashing into you.I am sure the state can spend the money on other things, senior citzen programs, one stop career progams, for the unemployed and other benefits for this county.we need to get people back to work and companies up and running again. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 6:03 PM
279. let's fix the exsisting roads first. a life long local resident, i have never seen the roads in such terrible condition. cost me over $400 in car repair last week. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 6:02 PM
280. The state of New York is pitiful and foolish. $6.1 million could go a long way toward balancing the absurd budget. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 6:02 PM
281. Should have been completed several years ago Mon, Mar 1, 2010 5:51 PM
282. absolutly not what is wrong with this state don" t they know how much in debt they are already they need to learn how to run the state like we have to run ahousehold. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 5:21 PM
283. Now that there is a light at the "s-curve" the accedent rate is down. and the state can NOT afford that reconstruction. keep a couple of the prisons open instead. the brigde was re-built and the light was put in. why spend money the state does not have? who is giving that fool of a governor these stupid ideas ? is that person on drugs? spend the money on the prisons. keep them open in st. lawrence county. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 5:20 PM
284. More wasteful spending. If you cant see where your going DONT Simple plain logic. We cannot afford so many things that just require logic and common sense. New different color signs more signs not in english. get real. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 5:08 PM
285. In todays economy this is a WASTE of money, maybe a couple of years ago it wouldn't be an issue. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 4:56 PM
286. This has been in existence for how long? Built to last. Not like todays creations. Leave as is. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 4:56 PM
287. there are better ways to spend the money Mon, Mar 1, 2010 4:49 PM
288. BIG FAT NO Mon, Mar 1, 2010 4:43 PM
289. Yes this is a dangerous curve and there has been many accidents but, with the state crisis I think how they have it set up with a light it could be put off for another time. It's not like this something new, it has been like this for many years. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 4:41 PM
290. if it isnt "broke" why "fix" it? I travel that section of road frequently and the few minutes I spend at the light when it is red is trivial; just means I will get to where I am going a few minutes later. At a later date when the budget deficit has lessened then revisit the reconstruction of that section of highway. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 4:33 PM
291. as a resident of Colton I do NOT believe this project is necessary. I do believe that some tweeking could be done on the lights that are in place now. The wait can sometimes be extremely long...15 plus minutes at a red light and nobody is even on that stretch! Surely the stop light issue could be fixed for much less than $6.1 million. There are better uses for the money and by better uses I do not mean spending it on snowmobile trails. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 4:30 PM
292. jobs need to be created! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 4:22 PM
293. it is necessary, but not now Mon, Mar 1, 2010 4:18 PM
294. Just another way for the state to throw away money, that curve has been there for eons and people should be used to it by now, take the money and pay down the states debt Mon, Mar 1, 2010 4:14 PM
295. Eventually maybe but, not at this time. I've driven that road and don't find it problem that the road isn't "straight". Maybe those who travel it more than me will answer whether or not the bridge, or lack of, is an issue or a minor inconvenience. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 4:07 PM
296. Come on people, it sure would be nice to have a nice straight road but NY cant even keep their basic responsibilities at this point. We can live with the inconvenience of that curve for a few more years. We have to prioritize and only spend what is available. People cannot keep paying more. I am a big supporter of good roads and bridges but we as a state need to get our fiscal house in order, and that goes for the Fed. Govt. too! If we dont get our financial act straightened out soon, our state and nation will be bankrupt! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 3:56 PM
297. absolutely not/there are much better ways to use money at this time Mon, Mar 1, 2010 3:50 PM
298. How long is the government going to keep throwing away money on things that are not necessities. Over $6 million for a one mile stretch of road? Are you kidding me? Maybe the bridge needs replacing, but leave the road and taxpayers alone! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 3:42 PM
299. DOT should re-look at all of their projects and determine which ones are necessary. For instance they should re-look at their project involving closure of Jay Street in the Village of Canton. That project, much like the Rt 56 'S-curve" would benefit just a small number of people. Aren't there more pressing projects that would truly benefit a larger portion of people in the North Country. Perhaps they should look at so many of our bridges that are falling into serious disrepair. Both Jay Street and the S-curse still function for the amount of traffic they accomodate, whereas some of our bridges certainly do not. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 3:31 PM
300. The six million dollar mile? Well, why not? It's somebody else's money, right? Mon, Mar 1, 2010 3:27 PM
301. The way you asked the question,it sounds like you are looking for negitive feed back,is the job necessary? The traffic is still moving and no one has gotten killed lately, doesn"t make it a bad idea.It will generate some work for the area, improve a dangerious section of a heavly used highway. To top it all off,if the money isn"t used for the S-curve improvement ,it won"t be put to a better idea and it will be spent reguardless.I myself came upon that s-curve in the rain an fog one nite while returning to massena and I still can"t forget how close I was to having an accident.I strongly believe if the project can be achieved at this time,GO FOR IT! Believe me the money will be wasted elsewhere,if not used for the s-curve. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 3:24 PM
302. There are other roads that need fixing more than this. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 3:23 PM
303. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 3:21 PM
304. replace bridge Mon, Mar 1, 2010 3:18 PM
305. NY State is a joke. No wonder everyone is moving out of state and the north country. The place is so depressing. I'm so glad I got out 10+ years ago. The best decision of my life. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 3:17 PM
306. I travel that area every week and I like the traffic light there,It slows people down that travel that area. There are more important things to take care of than those S curves. Waste of Money! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 3:05 PM
307. It's been like that forever, it's a project that can wait till more important repairs are done. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 3:00 PM
308. I understand the concern of safety, but It is safer now with the lights then its ever been. Why not wait until tge state can afford it? Mon, Mar 1, 2010 2:57 PM
309. It is not a heavily travelled section of road the traffic lights that are there are keeping it safe. It is a minor inconvenience that can be taken care of in better times. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 2:49 PM
310. Absolutely not --- things are working fine as it isl keep the lights -so you have to wait a minute or two to have opposite traffic pass. I take the road whenever i travel through the mountains to MA. Its not that big a deal to stop and the thought of a detour like the last around there was a nightmare never mind the extra time --put the money to better use -like not taking away from Health care facilities. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 2:45 PM
311. Place the $6,000,000.00 on the prisons in St Lawrence County and keep them open. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 2:43 PM
312. Is it necessary? No, but it would be nice to have it straightened out. I don't think it is any more necessary than the proposed Roof Top Highway. Look around the rest of the state and in particular NYC. I bet the amount of money we don't know about being spent in those areas for useless things far outweighs what will be spent on Rt 56. Why does this area always have to give up or give in and go without? Mon, Mar 1, 2010 2:40 PM
313. are they CRAZY? what in the h*ll would you be thinking to entertain this idea? why wouldnt the state put the money towards fixing the "state jail" boiler and keep the jobs here, or put the 6mil to use somewhere other then that winding road which everyone is used to using now anyway ? idiots their all idiots... Mon, Mar 1, 2010 2:35 PM
314. To many accidents happen up there it shold have been done many years ago. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 2:34 PM 315. If there is a safety concern, perhaps the speed limit should be markedly reduced on the approach to this "S" curvce for the time being. Budget preparations for this project should be made for this project to be initiated at a future time and funds can start to be accumulated rather than expended at one time. The curve has been there for quite some time. This is not the economy to address it. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 2:22 PM
316. Leave the "S" cursve alone. That money can be put to better uses. Don't we need to try to balance the budget instead of spending? Use common sense. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 2:19 PM
317. people should read and adhear to the sign coming into the "S" curve... and follow instructions! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 2:05 PM
318. As someone who's on that road not infrequently, the light is a bit of an inconvenience. But the single best thing the DOT could do in NNY would be to "study", and then promptly and simply fix, the traffic debacle in the village of Potsdam. The lights are brutally long and mistimed and anyone on any kind of schedule cannot help but get irritated. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 1:57 PM
319. That "S" curve is not the location of the fatal crash involving John O'Neil. There are more dangerous curves on that highway. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 1:41 PM
320. let us quit spendingmoney we donot have. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 1:31 PM
321. I travel that road frequently and it is not that much of wait until the light changes. The s-curves are also a landmark for the area and saftey is no longer an issue. The money could be better spent to keep jobs and also to keep parks open Mon, Mar 1, 2010 1:28 PM
322. I am sure this money could be used better for repairs that are really needed elsewhere in county. The bridge now is very safe- with traffic lights and everyone is used to it now. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 1:13 PM
323. it was not the site of John O'neil's crash. it happened south of the former Hams Inn on Rt 56. Replace the bridge with a 2 lane but leave the curve. is part of our north country . Mon, Mar 1, 2010 1:13 PM
324. It should have been done years ago. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 1:02 PM
325. There has been a traffic light installed, Its working fine. The light has pretty much solved the dangers of that curve. Lets let the mountains and Cold brook be. I don't see any reason to destroy what nature has made so we can lay pavement. 6.1 million could go a long way twards, Keeping a state park open, Stocking our lakes and rivers, Offset the ridiculous price of a hunting licence. Who am i kidding we have no say. It will be built. " and i bet there will be a turn off for a state trooper to set in and write tickets". You know, There are axe murderers out there with headlights and taillights out possible armed cell phones etc. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 1:01 PM
326. Yes, you can not let your infra structure fail and allow yourself to get behind on those projects. It also takes jobs to to work like this. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 1:01 PM
327. Yes it is worth it!
Think of how many lives could have been saved if it would have been done years ago! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 12:39 PM 328. Use part of the money to fix the other curve, south of that bridge... and the rest to keep the parks open...! Families need an inexpensive place to vacation in these times.. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 12:32 PM
329. No, the bridge is still usable. Don't fix what is not really all that broken. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 12:32 PM 330. The lights work fine. Take the $6.1 and use it to save some jobs in the North Country. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 12:27 PM 331. They made modifications after the last big accident and I don't believe there have been serious complaints since so now is not the time to put money into this. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 12:21 PM 332. The timing is bad financially speaking with all of the shortfalls, layoffs, closures and deficits. It is probably not one of the most lucrative choices to make right now. But, what if your loved one was killed there? Might you be whistling a different tune? Is it "necessary"? No. Is it preventative? Yes. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 12:19 PM 333. It would seem like there would be more important things to do with 6.1 million then straighten a curve out on a road that is not heavy traveled! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 12:03 PM
334. I travel through the "S" curve regularly. Outside of the current situation, being regulated by traffic lights, and being one lane of travel, the issue that I ever saw with the "S" curve was the width of the travel lanes. Rather than spending the money to straighten the curves, it would make more sense to simply widen the roadway. I remember that stretch being called the "S" curve back to my childhood. It gives character to the area, and I feel that spending the money to straighten the roadway is not necessary. As said before, the only issue is the width of the lanes. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 12:01 PM 335. I THink it can be repaired for a lot less money. Spend your money wisely Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:58 AM
336. Definitely not! We can live without the road being straightened, we've done it this long. And it's not like any of the money from the construction would be spent on companies here, it would go to out of state companies, and thus to their tax rolls. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:31 AM 337. How much is a life ? That section of highway has been a death trap for ages. Now that modern tech knows how to fix it, get it done. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:30 AM
338. That road has been there for years. NYS needs to quit wasteing money that they don't have. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:24 AM
339. Absolutely NO! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:23 AM
340. Absolutley not! The S curve is well marked and actually slows down traffic so it probably promotes safety. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:23 AM 341. They should hold off for along time this state needs alot more then a straight road. get people off welfare and unemployment, Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:22 AM 342. Be real...........what REALLY is the reason for tossing millions (that's SIX-plus MILLION $$$$$). I understand the state needs to USE the money given to acquire more......but there are so many worthwhile projects on hold right now. Hey....how about signs posting the route of the butterfly? Perhaps DOT has used a tad bit too-much hairspray? Those governing the dispursement of these funds need to loosen their ties, tighten their belts and start thinking and LOOKING at our area! More waste will fail to impress taxpayers when they get to the voting booth~ Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:20 AM
343. No! Not at this time when our state is in such a financial mess! Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:17 AM
344. Assemblyman John G. A. ONeil was not killed on the S curves Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:14 AM 345. your talking about a highway that's been forced down to one lane. it impedes traffic flow and should be put back at least the way it was. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:13 AM 346. In crisis time, we certainly can use the money elsewhere. It can wait for better $ (Fiscal) times. Mon, Mar 1, 2010 11:09 AM 347. I actually prefer the way it is set up now. Single lane traffic around the S curves will prevent a lot of accidents. The traffic light may hold everyone up a couple minutes but isn't a life worth that? This is just another thing that the North Country residents don't NEED. I am sure we could spend the money somewhere else, maybe helping out the schools so our children don't suffer from NYS attacking the north country.
