Allegiant Air flights in and out of Florida cancelled just one day after first plane arrives at Ogdensburg’s new airport

OGDENSBURG -- Flights out of Ogdensburg to Florida have been cancelled due to Hurricane Matthew, according Ogdensburg Business Development Manager John Morrison.

The cancellation comes just one day after the first flight Allegiant Air flight touched down in Ogdensburg newly expanded airport.

The category 4 hurricane is expected to reach the Florida coast this afternoon (Thursday) near West Palm Beach and Cape Canaveral.

More than a million people have already evacuated Florida’s east coast.

“First and foremost our thoughts and prayers are with the people down in Florida,” Morrison said.

He said it’s hard to predict how long flights to Florida will remain grounded, but encouraged customers to check the website for updated flight information.

“It’s going to be day by day, I don’t think anyone knows exactly what the storm is going to do,” he said. “But it sounds like the storm is going to be doing some serious damage.”

The storm has already killed more than 100 people across the Caribbean, according to national news reports.

The hurricane is expected to bring sustained winds of 140 mph.

President Barak Obama has signed and emergency declaration and Florida Governor Rick Scott as activated more than 3,500 members of the National Guard, according to national reports.
