CANTON --Canton, Madrid and Potsdam non-profits recently split $7,750 garnered during a September fundraiser.
In total, Community Bank branches for what they call "National Good Neighbor Day" donated the cash to local nonprofits of their choice.
Locally, three branches in St. Lawrence County participated:
• Canton held a dress-down day and bake sale to benefit Canton Neighborhood Center and Church & Community Program.
• Madrid hosted dress-down days to raise money for New Beginnings Clothing and Food Outreach.
• Potsdam collected toys, cleaning products, food and treats for Potsdam Humane Society.
“National Good Neighbor Day” was created in 1971 by Becky Mattson from Lakeside, Mont., and proclaimed a national day by President Jimmy Carter in 1978 to raise public awareness that good neighbors help achieve human understanding and build strong, thriving communities. It is celebrated annually on Sept. 28 as a day of gratitude and community building.
