MASSENA -- The 56 Auto Drive-In is celebrating its 60th anniversary Wednesday night with a special price of $11 for a whole legal carload of movie fans to see the family-friendly double feature of "Minions" and "Max."
Showtime is at dusk, which this week is about 9 p.m. Gates will open at 7:30 p.m. and the first 20 cars will get a special gift. There will be giveaways throughout the evening and cake at intermission.
The “56” was built originally by Peter Papayanakos and has been open every season since then. It was one of over 4000 drive-ins across the country in the 1950s.
At one time St. Lawrence County had seven drive-ins alone.
Now there are fewer than 400 that survive nationwide.
