25 percent fewer in St. Lawrence County receiving unemployment insurance than a year ago

The number of people on unemployment in May dropped about 25 percent compared to the same month last year, according to figures released by the state Department of Labor.

The DOL says the rate was 5.5 percent last month and 6.9 percent in May 2015, one of the lowest unemployment rates in recent memory.

There were 2,600 people on the dole in May and 3,300 the same month the year before. There were 44,300 people working last month and 44,000 in May 2015.

To our east in Franklin County, the unemployment rate saw a 1.7 percent net drop to 4.9 percent last month from 6.6 percent in May 2015.

There were 1,000 people receiving benefits in May and 1,300 in May 2015. There were 19,100 people working in the county last month and in May 2015, according to DOL stats.

To our west in Jefferson County, the rate made a 1.1 percent net decrease to 5.2 percent in May from 6.3 percent in May 2015.

There were 2,400 people on unemployment last month, compared to 3,000 the same month last year. There were 45,000 people working in May and 44,100 in May 2015, DOL said.
