Canton Town Board seeks potential board appointee

CANTON –   The Canton Town Board is looking for someone to serve on the board.

As a result of former board member Bob Santamoor's resignation on March 13, the Canton Town Board is interested in appointing a town resident to fill the open seat.

The new appointee will serve until Dec. 31 and the open seat will be on the ballot in November. Santamoor's town board term has three years remaining or until Dec. 31, 2027.

Town of Canton residents may send a letter of interest to the board, by mail or email, to Town Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley (mashley@cantonny.gov) 60 Main Street, Canton, NY. 13617 no later than April 5 at 1 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to also contact board members with questions regarding the position.  They are James Smith (jsmith@cantonny.gov); John Taillon (jtaillon@cantonny.gov); Randy Brown (rbrown@cantonny.gov).

The anticipated merger of the Canton and Potsdam Housing Authorities, along with the U.S. Housing and Urban Development regulations, forced Santamoor to relinquish his town council seat.

Santamoor submitted his letter of resignation, dated March 13, to Town Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley, Canton Town Clerk Heidi Smith and fellow town councilmen.

Santamoor, a Republican, was elected to a second four-year term on the town board in November 2023.

He is the executive director of the Potsdam Housing Authority and entered into a management agreement with the Canton Housing Authority in March 2023.

“Unfortunately, because of the requirements of my new position due to the anticipated merger and HUD regulations, I must resign my position as Town Council Member. There are additional programs and services that I will be responsible for through US HUD. With these latest programs I am prohibited from holding an elected office of any kind,” his resignation letter read.

The town board had three options -  leave the seat open until the next general election, appoint some to the seat or hold a special election.

With the April 5 deadline to express interest, it is expected the town board will address the matter at its April 10 monthly board meeting.
